“I don’t know how I will pay for this”, said Wajiha, after surveying the destruction of her home inside De’ra refugee camp, in Syria. The 63-year-old widow returned to her home with her two daughters and two grandchildren as soon as people were allowed to return. Dera’a camp was home to 10,000 Palestine refugees before 2011. So far, 400 families have returned. All her furniture was looted, her roof has bullet holes and two ceilings will need to be fixed due to damage from mortars. “I came back because I was asked to leave a house in a safer area where I was squatting,” explains Wajiha. “I cannot afford to pay rent. I survive on UNRWA assistance.”
